Samantha Hansford, Cancer Researcher
Samantha Hansford is doing research that’s close to her heart – and her other internal organs, too. Samantha’s family tree has been plagued by a rare genetic mutation for generations, causing stomach and breast cancer in dozens of her relatives. When Samantha’s mom and uncle tested positive for the gene, she knew she had to do something to help. She pursued her masters at the University of British Columbia under the supervision of a fellow Newfoundlander, and began studying the very gene that affects her family. Today, Samantha is studying medicine at Memorial University in St. John’s, conducting genetic research that could save lives – maybe even her family’s.
